Overview

San Francisco de Asís Mission Church in Ranchos de Taos, built between about 1772 and 1815 by Franciscans, is a National Historic Landmark (1970) and one of the most painted and photographed churches in the world, with massive adobe buttresses and no window in front. Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, and Paul Strand all depicted it. The church is open to visitors, with a small museum, and is re-plastered by the community each year.
