The Valencia Peak Trail in Montaña de Oro State Park offers one of the most rewarding hikes along California’s Central Coast. Rising to 1,347 feet, the trail provides sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Morro Bay, and the inland peaks of the Seven Sisters. The 4.5-mile round-trip hike climbs 1,275 feet through coastal sage scrub and marine terraces, with switchbacks that ease the ascent and offer frequent scenic overlooks. Along the way, hikers pass junctions with other trails like Rattlesnake Flats and Badger Trail, making it possible to create loop routes for extended exploration. The summit features a picnic table and 360-degree views that stretch for miles in every direction.

Valencia Peak is a favorite among locals and visitors for its accessibility and dramatic vistas. The trailhead is located just south of Spooner’s Cove, near the historic Spooner Ranch House, which serves as the park’s visitor center. Springtime brings a burst of golden wildflowers that gave the park its name—Montaña de Oro, or “Mountain of Gold.” While the trail is moderately strenuous, it is suitable for most hikers and offers a peaceful escape into nature. Whether you're chasing sunrise views or enjoying a quiet afternoon climb, Valencia Peak delivers a quintessential California hiking experience.
