Overview
Union Square is a 2.6-acre plaza in the heart of downtown San Francisco, surrounded by Geary, Powell, Post and Stockton streets, and the city’s main shopping district. It has the Dewey Monument column topped by the goddess Nike, large department stores such as Macy’s, luxury boutiques, the Powell Street cable car turnaround, hotels and theaters. In winter, it has an ice rink and a big Christmas tree. The plaza was named for pro-Union rallies during the Civil War.
