Overview
Myrtle Beach is a coastal resort city at the center of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of continuous beach in northeastern South Carolina, and one of the most visited destinations in the country with more than 20 million visitors a year. Warm weather, miles of beaches, about 80 golf courses, more than 1,800 restaurants, and around 425 hotels make it a top family and golf vacation.
The area began as a quiet stretch of coast and became a resort in the early 1900s after the railroad arrived, and it grew into a major destination with tourism now its main industry.
The 1.2-mile Myrtle Beach Boardwalk along the oceanfront was rated one of the best in the U.S., and the 187-foot SkyWheel ferris wheel has views over the ocean. Broadway at the Beach has shops, restaurants, attractions, and nightlife, and live shows are offered year-round at theaters such as the Alabama Theatre, Carolina Opry, Legends in Concert, and Medieval Times. Other attractions include amusement parks, an aquarium, more than 30 miniature golf courses, and Myrtle Beach State Park for camping, swimming, and hiking. Nearby are Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, and Pawleys Island.
Myrtle Beach has no major league team, but the minor-league Myrtle Beach Pelicans play baseball here, and Coastal Carolina University's Chanticleers won the 2016 College World Series.
