From Newport, VT (18 mi): Take VT‑105 E from Newport toward Derby, merge onto VT‑5A South, and continue along the scenic roadway between Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor to reach Lake Willoughby.
Overview
Lake Willoughby is a lake in the town of Westmore in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. The lake's southern end is surrounded by the Willoughby State Forest. This state forest includes Mount Pisgah, Mount Hor, collectively "Willoughby Gap". The lake is about 5 miles (8.0 km) long
Willoughby Lake has a public beach that stretches 0.25 miles (0.4 km) on the north shore of the lake, or in the zone of the lake outlet. Another public beach is located at the bottom of the South Bay of the Lake. The village of Westmore is located on the east side, at the confluence area of Mill Creek which drains the waters of Long Pond. Many cottages and houses are located on North-East bank of the lake.
Mount Mansfield is one of three spots in Vermont where true alpine tundra survives from the Ice Ages. A few acres exist on Camel's Hump and Mount Abraham nearby and to the south, but Mount Mansfield's summit still holds about 200 acres (81 ha). In 1980, the Mount Mansfield Natural Area was designated as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.
