The Basilica of St. Fidelis, affectionately known as the “Cathedral of the Plains,” is a towering Romanesque church built between 1908 and 1911 by Volga German immigrants. Constructed from native limestone, the basilica features twin 141-foot bell towers and a cruciform layout that spans 220 feet in length. Its architectural grandeur and historical significance earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and the designation of a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014. The church welcomes over 16,000 visitors annually and offers an audio tour for self-guided exploration.

Inside, the basilica boasts intricate stained glass windows, hand-carved altars, and a marble sanctuary that reflect the craftsmanship and devotion of its builders. The church remains an active parish and a spiritual landmark for the region. Whether attending Mass or simply admiring its artistry, visitors to St. Fidelis experience a profound sense of history and reverence. It stands not only as a place of worship but also as a monument to the enduring faith and cultural heritage of Kansas’ early settlers.
