Neighborhood in Lower Manhattan known for its location of many artists' lofts and art galleries, and its variety of shops ranging from trendy upscale boutiques to national and international chain store outlets
General Information
Overview
SoHo ("South of Houston Street," a name coined in 1962) is a Lower Manhattan neighborhood of artists' lofts, art galleries, and shops from trendy boutiques to national chains. Almost all of it is in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District (city landmark 1973, National Historic Landmark), which holds the world's greatest concentration of cast-iron architecture, about 250 such buildings in New York City, mostly here. Cast iron was cheaper than stone or brick, made ornament from foundry molds, and allowed big windows that flooded interiors with light.
