The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights is the world's sixth-largest church by area and one of the largest Anglican cathedrals, 601 feet long with a 177-foot nave roof. Building began in 1892 in Byzantine and Romanesque styles, and the plan switched to Gothic Revival after 1909; it is still only about two-thirds complete, earning the nickname "St. John the Unfinished." A 2001 fire damaged part of it and it was renovated and rededicated in 2008. Its vast interior hosts events and art exhibitions, and the surrounding close was landmarked in 2017.
