Overview
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, a sprawling, diverse metropolis in Southeast Texas near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Best known as home to NASA's Johnson Space Center and a global hub for the energy industry, the city draws visitors with its lively arts scene, top-ranked museums, and international food culture.
Houston was founded in 1836 at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou, a point now known as Allen's Landing, and named after General Sam Houston, who led Texas to independence from Mexico at the nearby Battle of San Jacinto. The city briefly served as capital of the Republic of Texas before growing into a major regional trading center.
Houston's Museum District is home to nineteen museums, galleries, and community spaces that draw more than 7 million visitors a year, while the nearby Theater District anchors downtown with venues such as the Bayou Place entertainment complex for live music, film, and theater.
Space Center Houston, the official visitors' center of NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, lets visitors see moon rocks, try a shuttle simulator, and explore the history of NASA's human spaceflight program.
Other popular attractions include the Galleria, Texas's largest shopping mall, Old Market Square, the Downtown Aquarium, and Sam Houston Race Park. The city's extensive park system includes Hermann Park (home to the Houston Zoo and Houston Museum of Natural Science), Memorial Park, Discovery Green, Buffalo Bayou Park, and Sam Houston Park, which preserves homes dating back to the 1820s.
Houston is home to four major league sports teams: the Houston Astros (Major League Baseball), Houston Rockets (National Basketball Association), Houston Texans (National Football League), and Houston Dynamo FC (Major League Soccer).
