Overview
Buckskin Gulch is thought to be the longest slot canyon in the U.S. and one of the deepest, about 20 miles long, part of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness on the Utah-Arizona border, roughly halfway between Kanab and Page. The walls are narrow and up to 500 feet high, and there is no escape from a flash flood, so check the forecast. It can be a long day hike from Wire Pass or a multi-day trip with Paria Canyon.
Access
- Buckskin Trailhead: about 4.5 miles south of US-89 on House Rock Valley Road, for the full canyon
- Wire Pass Trailhead: about 8 miles south of US-89, a shorter and easier entrance
- White House Trailhead: for the Paria Canyon end
- Permits: required for both day hiking and overnight backpacking in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness; day permits can be bought at the trailhead or online
