Overview
Perdido Key is a narrow barrier island community between Pensacola and Orange Beach, Alabama — its Spanish name means "lost." Stretching about 16 miles and no more than a few hundred yards wide in most spots, nearly 60% of the island is protected as state or national parkland, making it one of the last undeveloped stretches of beach on this part of the Gulf Coast. The eastern end falls within Gulf Islands National Seashore.
Big Lagoon State Recreation Area
This 678-acre park has boardwalks and nature trails, a boat ramp, campsites, and an observation tower with panoramic views across Big Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway to Gulf Islands National Seashore. Gray foxes, raccoons, and great blue herons are common sights.
Perdido Key State Recreation Area
A 247-acre stretch of protected dunes and beach on the barrier island itself, home to shorebirds and other coastal wildlife.
On the Water
Local outfitters run kayak trips, dolphin-watching excursions, and sailing and moonlight cruises out on the bay.
