Overview

Brookgreen Gardens, just south of Murrells Inlet, is a 9,100-acre sculpture garden, wildlife preserve, and zoo built across four former rice plantations. Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington bought the land in 1930 and opened it in 1932 to showcase Anna's sculptures; today it holds the largest collection of American figurative sculpture in an outdoor setting anywhere in the world, and both the gardens and the historic Atalaya Castle across the highway are a National Historic Landmark.

Tour the Sculpture Garden
More than 1,400 works of American figurative sculpture, many by Anna Hyatt Huntington herself, line garden paths, fountains, and landscaped vistas across the property.

Visit the Lowcountry Zoo
A small zoo and nature center showcase native Lowcountry wildlife alongside the gardens.

Walk the Lowcountry Trail
This award-winning boardwalk crosses the hillside above Mainfield, a restored rice field from the former Brookgreen Plantation. Interpretive panels and stainless-steel figures along the trail tell the story of the enslaved people who worked the plantation, and a free audio tour brings that history to life for visitors who want to go deeper.

Explore the Nature Trails
Self-guided trails wind past longleaf pines, Spanish moss-draped live oaks, and river and marsh views, home to some 2,000 identified plant and animal species. Boat tours departing from the property's Atlantic side, now part of Huntington Beach State Park, offer views of Sandy Island.

See Nights of a Thousand Candles
Held each holiday season, this after-dark event lights the gardens and sculptures with more than 2,700 candles and countless additional lights — one of the most popular events on the Grand Strand.
