Overview
Boathouse Row is a row of 15 Victorian boathouses on the east bank of the Schuylkill River along Kelly Drive, just north of the Fairmount Water Works and Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rowing clubs and racing shells occupy them, and all are at least a century old. Since 1979 the houses have been outlined in lights at night, and computerized LEDs installed in 2005 change color for events and seasons, giving them a gingerbread-house look reflected in the river.
Boathouse Row is a center of American rowing, with Drexel, Penn, and La Salle rowing from its houses, and it hosts major regattas including the Dad Vail Regatta, Stotesbury Cup, and Head of the Schuylkill. Lloyd Hall (No. 1) is the only public facility, and the Sedgeley Club (No. 15) runs the Turtle Rock Lighthouse.
