The West Village is the western part of Greenwich Village, between the Hudson River, West 14th Street, Greenwich Avenue, and Christopher Street, known for its "off the grid" crooked streets laid out in an 18th-century plan, brownstones and townhouses, cafes, and its bohemian history (nicknamed "Little Bohemia" from 1916). Preservationists have won landmark protection for more than 50 blocks. The Meatpacking District at its northern end has trendy boutiques and nightclubs.
