Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Waterfalls, Historic Canals, and Forested Valleys

1 Day

Nestled between Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves a surprising landscape of waterfalls, wetlands, forests, and historic transportation corridors in the heart of northeastern Ohio. Once shaped by glaciers, Native American travel routes, canal builders, and railroads, the valley now offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and cultural history unlike any other national park. This one-day itinerary follows the park's most iconic destinations in a logical north-to-south route, combining scenic overlooks, peaceful hiking trails, historic landmarks, and picturesque waterfalls. Inspired by the rich storytelling of a National Geographic expedition and the practical pacing of a Tripadvisor itinerary, this journey captures the very best of Cuyahoga Valley in a single unforgettable day.

Day 1

Today explores the highlights of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, beginning with the park's cultural and historical attractions before transitioning into its most beautiful natural landscapes. Along the way you'll discover historic canal-era sites, walk through wetlands teeming with wildlife, explore forested trails, and stand beside some of Ohio's most impressive waterfalls. The day concludes among dramatic sandstone ledges that provide a breathtaking perspective over the valley below.

1

Begin your adventure at the primary visitor center for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Exhibits introduce the history, geology, wildlife, and cultural heritage of the valley while providing an excellent overview of the landscapes you'll encounter throughout the day. The center also serves as a convenient starting point for exploring nearby trails and attractions.

2

Travel back to the nineteenth century at the Canal Exploration Center, where exhibits explain how the Ohio & Erie Canal transformed transportation and commerce throughout the region. Afterwards, enjoy a walk along the historic Towpath Trail, following the route once used by mules pulling canal boats through the valley. The flat trail provides beautiful views of forests, wetlands, and remnants of the canal era.

3

Continue to one of the park's premier wildlife viewing areas. Once an industrial dumping site, Beaver Marsh has been restored into a thriving wetland ecosystem where beavers, herons, turtles, and migratory birds flourish. Boardwalks and observation points offer excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife observation throughout the year.

4

Experience the valley from a different perspective aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Following the historic transportation corridor through the heart of the park, the railway offers relaxing views of forests, rivers, wetlands, and small historic communities. Even a short ride provides a memorable glimpse into the landscapes that have shaped the valley for centuries.

5

The Everett Covered Bridge is one of the most photographed landmarks in the park and the last remaining covered bridge in Summit County. Surrounded by scenic countryside and quiet streams, it offers a charming reminder of nineteenth-century rural America and makes an excellent stop for photographs.

6

The crown jewel of the national park, Brandywine Falls plunges more than sixty feet over layered sandstone and shale formations into a dramatic gorge below. Boardwalks and viewing platforms provide outstanding perspectives of the waterfall, making it one of Ohio's premier natural attractions and a highlight of any visit to Cuyahoga Valley.

7

Continue your waterfall exploration with two of the park's lesser-known gems. Blue Hen Falls tumbles gracefully through a forested ravine, while Bridal Veil Falls cascades delicately over layered rock formations. These smaller waterfalls offer a quieter and more intimate experience compared to the popularity of Brandywine Falls.

8

Conclude your day at one of the most dramatic landscapes in the park. The Ledges Trail winds through towering sandstone formations, narrow passageways, moss-covered cliffs, and forested overlooks. The cliffs rise sharply above the surrounding valley, creating scenery unlike anywhere else in Ohio. Arriving in the late afternoon or near sunset adds a golden glow to the sandstone formations and provides a spectacular finale to your exploration of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
