Overview
Loretto Chapel is a former Catholic chapel, now a museum and wedding chapel, famous for its "miraculous" spiral staircase that rises 20 feet to the choir loft in two full turns with no visible center support. The Sisters of Loretto commissioned the Gothic Revival chapel in 1873 for their girls' school, and the staircase was built between 1877 and 1881. Legend says a mysterious carpenter built it in answer to the nuns' prayers, but the stairs have a hidden support, and no nail. The chapel is one block from the Plaza, with an admission fee.
