Overview
The Pawnee Buttes are two prominent buttes rising about 250 feet from the shortgrass prairie in northeastern Colorado, in the Pawnee National Grassland, a fossil-rich area and one of the best birding sites in Colorado (raptors, longspurs, and other prairie birds). A well-marked trail of about 4 miles round trip leads to the base of the west butte. The east butte is on private land. The buttes are best in spring, and dirt roads may be impassable when wet.
