Overview

Wawona is a historic mountain village in the southern part of Yosemite National Park, about 27 miles from Yosemite Valley on Highway 41, and the gateway to the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias and Chilnualna Falls. It is best known for the Wawona Hotel, a classic Victorian resort built in 1876 and a National Historic Landmark, with an old-fashioned golf course, covered bridge and Pioneer Yosemite History Center.

The Miwok called the area Pallachun, “a good place to stay.” Galen Clark, the first state guardian of Yosemite, established Clark’s Station here in 1856, and the Washburn brothers built a larger hotel in 1876. Wawona was added to the national park in 1932.
