Overview
The San Francisco cable car system is the world’s last manually operated cable car system, a moving National Historic Landmark and an icon of the city. Of the original 23 lines, three remain: the Powell–Hyde and Powell–Mason lines from Union Square to Fisherman’s Wharf, and the California Street line. Rides are operated by the Muni, with a fare paid onboard or by the Muni Passport, and lines are long at the Powell Street turnaround. The Cable Car Museum on Nob Hill shows the winding machinery.
