Overview

Point Sur State Historic Park centers on the 1889 Point Sur Lightstation, perched 361 feet above the Pacific on a volcanic rock along the Big Sur coast, about 19 miles south of Carmel. It is California’s only complete turn-of-the-20th-century lightstation open to the public, and it is on the National Register of Historic Places. Keepers and their families lived here until the lighthouse was automated in 1974. The lightstation can be visited only on docent-led tours.

Things to Do

Visit One of California's Most Historic Lighthouses

Point Sur State Historic Park preserves the iconic Point Sur Lightstation, one of the most significant maritime landmarks on the California coast. Perched atop a dramatic volcanic rock rising from the Pacific Ocean, the lighthouse has guided ships along the rugged Big Sur coastline since 1889 and remains one of the most photographed landmarks in the region.

Take a Guided Tour of the Lightstation

The primary attraction at Point Sur is the guided walking tour of the historic lightstation complex. Visitors can explore the lighthouse, former keeper residences, support buildings, and exhibits while learning about maritime navigation, lighthouse operations, and life on this isolated coastal outpost.

Learn About Maritime History and Shipwrecks

The park preserves stories of shipwrecks, coastal navigation, and maritime commerce along California's Central Coast. Interpretive programs highlight the role of Point Sur in protecting vessels navigating the often dangerous waters of Big Sur.

Enjoy Spectacular Big Sur Coastal Scenery

Point Sur offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, and the Santa Lucia Mountains. The dramatic setting provides visitors with some of the most impressive scenery along California's Highway 1 corridor.

Observe Wildlife and Marine Mammals

The surrounding coastline supports a rich variety of wildlife, including sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, dolphins, and migrating gray whales during seasonal migrations. Numerous seabirds can also be observed from viewpoints around the historic site.

Experience Historic Preservation and Architecture

The lightstation complex is one of the most complete historic lighthouse stations remaining on the West Coast. Visitors can see restored buildings, original structures, and historic equipment that illustrate more than a century of maritime history.
