Overview

Garrapata State Park is a wild stretch of Big Sur coast along Highway 1, about 7 miles south of Carmel, with two miles of beachfront, coastal bluffs and hiking trails that lead from ocean beaches into redwood groves. Sea otters, harbor seals and California sea lions swim offshore, and gray whales pass close by during their migration. Soberanes Point, with its headland views, is one of the best short walks. There is no main entrance; park in the numbered pullouts along the highway.

Things to Do

Explore One of Big Sur's Most Spectacular Coastal Parks

Garrapata State Park protects more than 3,000 acres of dramatic coastline and rugged mountain terrain along California's famous Big Sur coast. The park is known for its pristine beaches, towering cliffs, redwood groves, coastal headlands, and spectacular ocean vistas, making it one of the most scenic destinations on Highway 1.

Experience Garrapata Beach

Garrapata Beach offers a breathtaking stretch of undeveloped shoreline backed by steep cliffs and coastal bluffs. Visitors can enjoy beach walks, photography, wildlife viewing, and dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean. The natural beauty and relatively uncrowded setting make it a favorite stop along the Big Sur coast.

Discover Coastal Bluff Trails

Several bluff-top trails provide panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, rocky headlands, sea stacks, and coastal vegetation. During spring, colorful wildflowers often blanket the bluffs, creating some of the most photogenic landscapes in Big Sur.

Explore Redwood Canyons and Coastal Forests

Beyond the coastline, Garrapata State Park features hidden canyons containing stands of coast redwoods, oak woodlands, and riparian habitats. These shaded areas provide a striking contrast to the windswept coastal environment and offer visitors opportunities to experience diverse ecosystems within a single park.

View Wildlife and Marine Life

The park is an excellent location for spotting wildlife, including sea otters, harbor seals, seabirds, migrating gray whales, and California condors in the surrounding region. Seasonal whale migrations and abundant birdlife make wildlife viewing a highlight throughout the year.

Enjoy Photography and Scenic Driving

Located along one of the most beautiful sections of California's Highway 1, Garrapata State Park attracts photographers seeking dramatic coastal scenery, rugged cliffs, wildflower displays, ocean sunsets, and iconic Big Sur landscapes.
