Overview
Byrd Park is a 200-acre park in Richmond next to Maymont, with a mile-long exercise trail, three small lakes, an amphitheater, and monuments. Pedal boats rent on Boat Lake (Fountain Lake), which has a lighted fountain. It is named for William Byrd II, whose family owned much of the land when Richmond was founded in 1737, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
The park grew around Richmond's 1870s-80s reservoir. Its Virginia War Memorial Carillon, with 56 bells, was built in 1932 for those who died in World War I and is played on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and July 4.
