How to Get There

From Petersburg (3 mi): Take VA-36 east from downtown Petersburg, follow signs for the Eastern Front Visitor Center, and continue to 5001 Siege Road at the main battlefield entrance.

Overview

Petersburg National Battlefield preserves the network of trenches, forts, and defensive lines around Petersburg, where Union and Confederate forces fought the longest campaign of the Civil War, from June 1864 to April 1865. Driving routes and trails past preserved earthworks show the trench warfare that foreshadowed the 20th century.
