Overview

The Mile High Swinging Bridge is one of North Carolina’s most iconic landmarks, perched atop Grandfather Mountain at an elevation of 5,305 feet. Spanning 228 feet across an 80-foot chasm, the bridge offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Originally built in 1952 and rebuilt in 1999 with modern materials, the bridge is designed to sway slightly, adding to the thrill of crossing. Visitors can reach the bridge via a short walk from the Top Shop, which includes an elevator for accessibility. The bridge is part of the Grandfather Mountain nature park, which also features wildlife habitats, a nature discovery center, and miles of hiking trails.

Admission to the bridge includes access to the entire park, making it a full-day destination for families, hikers, and nature lovers. Interpretive programs, scenic overlooks, and picnic areas enhance the experience, while the park’s unique weather patterns—often 10 to 20 degrees cooler than surrounding areas—add to its mystique. Whether you're crossing the bridge for the thrill or simply soaking in the views, the Mile High Swinging Bridge is a must-see marvel in the Southern Appalachians.
