Overview

The Tybee Island Light Station and Museum is one of the most complete historic lighthouses in the United States, with all of its original support buildings still intact on a five-acre site. First constructed in 1736 and rebuilt several times, the current lighthouse stands 145 feet tall and features a First Order Fresnel lens that continues to function as a navigational aid. Visitors can climb 178 steps to the top for panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and explore the restored Head Keeper’s Cottage, the 2nd Assistant Keeper’s Cottage, and the Summer Kitchen.

Across the street, the Tybee Museum is housed in Battery Garland, a historic fortification from the Spanish-American War era. The museum offers exhibits on Tybee Island’s history, from Native American settlements and colonial times to its role in the Civil War and World War II. Operated by the Tybee Island Historical Society, the site provides a rich educational experience and a glimpse into the maritime heritage of Georgia’s coast.
