Overview

River Street is Savannah's lively riverfront promenade, running two miles along the south bank of the Savannah River from the Talmadge Memorial Bridge to East Bay Street. The best-known stretch, East River Street, is packed with restaurants, cafés, and craft shops and is one of the city's top tourist attractions. Its half-mile pedestrian promenade is the John P. Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, named for Savannah's longest-serving mayor (1970-1992). The street is one-way from west to east, and it becomes East River Street where the Hyatt Regency spans it.

Terraces of former "King Cotton" warehouses line the south side beneath Yamacraw Bluff. Factors Row, a bluffside row of red brick buildings, is where cotton brokers once bargained, and Factors Walk runs along the middle level of the bluff between the warehouses below and Bay Street above. The warehouses were also used as holding cells for enslaved Africans.
