Overview

Forsyth Park is the 30-acre centerpiece of Savannah's historic district, laid out with the Parisian model of a large central green space in mind. Shaded walking paths, a Fragrant Garden for the blind, sports courts, open lawns, and occasional public concerts make it the city's favorite gathering place.

The park's icon is its cast-iron fountain, installed in 1858 and sitting on a direct line down the Bull Street corridor. Its design draws on work by French sculptor Michel Lienard and recalls the fountains at Place de la Concorde in Paris. It was cast by Janes, Beebe & Company of New York, the same foundry that made ironwork for the U.S. Capitol dome and the Brooklyn Bridge railings.

  • St. Patrick's Day: the fountain is ceremoniously turned green each year to celebrate Savannah's Irish heritage
  • On screen: it appears in films including The Longest Yard, Cape Fear, Forrest Gump, and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
