Overview
Ybor City is Tampa's historic Latin quarter northeast of downtown, founded in the 1880s by cigar maker Vicente Martinez-Ybor and settled by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Cuba, Spain, and Italy. Its cigar factories once rolled hundreds of millions of cigars a year, earning Tampa the nickname "Cigar City." Today it is a National Historic Landmark District of brick streets, social clubs, cigar shops, restaurants, and nightlife, and its 7th Avenue was named one of the "10 Great Streets in America" in 2008.
The neighborhood flourished until the Great Depression, declined after World War II, and was revived from the 1980s by artists and later a nightclub district. The Columbia Restaurant, founded here in 1905, is Florida's oldest restaurant.
