Overview

The Oldest Wooden School House at 14 St. George Street in St. Augustine is billed as the oldest wooden school building in the United States. Its exact construction date is unknown, but it first appears on tax records in 1716. Bald cypress and red cedar walls are held together with wooden pins and iron spikes, and a chain placed around the building in 1937 anchors it in case of a hurricane.

The schoolhouse is open every day except Christmas, with extended summer hours. A self-guided tour features an animatronic teacher and student telling the building's story, and there are period items, signs, and gardens behind the building.
