Overview
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine in the heart of the old city is the seat of the Catholic Bishop of St. Augustine and a National Historic Landmark (1970). Its congregation, founded in 1565, is the oldest Christian congregation in the contiguous United States. The present church was built in 1793-1797, and was rebuilt after an 1887 fire under architect James Renwick with a Spanish Renaissance-style bell tower.
Highlights
- Facade: Spanish mission (curved bell gables, clay tile roof) blended with Neoclassical details around the entry
- Coquina walls: local shellstone that survived the 1887 fire
- Interior: exposed decorated roof timbers and historic murals; the tower holds four bells, one inscribed 1682
