Destin is the best-known resort city on Florida's Emerald Coast, famed for sugar-white quartz-sand beaches, emerald-green Gulf water, and a working harbor that calls itself "The World's Luckiest Fishing Village" with the state's largest fishing fleet. More than 80 percent of the Emerald Coast's 4.5 million yearly visitors come to Destin, drawn by beaches, charter fishing, dolphin cruises, and the sandbar known as Crab Island.
Destin began as a fishing village settled by Captain Leonard Destin between 1845 and 1850, was incorporated in 1984, and has grown quickly since the 1980s. It sits on a peninsula between the Gulf and Choctawhatchee Bay, with East Pass, the bay's only Gulf outlet, at its western tip.
Highlights include the Destin Harbor Boardwalk, Henderson Beach State Park, and Scenic Gulf Drive, with nearby Miramar Beach, Sandestin, and Okaloosa Island. Seaside, Grayton Beach, and Rosemary Beach lie east, and Pensacola is about 48 miles west.
