Overview
The Loop marks one of the most recognizable switchbacks along Glacier National Park’s legendary Going-to-the-Sun Road. Positioned high above steep glacial valleys, the overlook provides sweeping views across rugged mountain peaks, dense evergreen forests, and sharp canyon walls carved by ancient ice. Visitors frequently stop to photograph the dramatic curves of the roadway as it climbs through alpine terrain toward Logan Pass. The surrounding landscape changes rapidly with elevation, transitioning from cedar forests and waterfalls to windswept slopes dotted with wildflowers and exposed rock formations.
The area also serves as a gateway to several popular hiking routes leading into Glacier’s high country wilderness. Trails departing near the overlook climb toward alpine passes, hanging valleys, and scenic ridgelines where mountain goats, bighorn sheep, marmots, and golden eagles are commonly seen. During summer months, melting snowfields feed waterfalls cascading through nearby canyons while cool mountain air and expansive scenery create one of the park’s most memorable roadside experiences. Combining engineering history, dramatic landscapes, and access to wilderness hiking, The Loop remains a signature stop along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
