Overview

The Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, built about 1697 at Broadway and Stone Street, is the oldest surviving house in Newport and one of the oldest in the state. Stamp Act rioters damaged it in 1765 when a Tory stamp master lived there. The Newport Historical Society has owned it since the 1920s and runs it as a house museum. It became one of the first National Historic Landmarks in 1960.
