From Concord, NH (12 mi): Take I‑93 North to Exit 15E toward I‑393 East, continue on NH‑106 North, then turn left onto Shaker Road and follow it approximately three miles to the entrance.

Overview

Castle in the Clouds (Lucknow) in Moultonborough is a 16-room Craftsman mansion on a 5,294-acre mountaintop estate with views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains. Shoe millionaire Thomas Gustave Plant built it in 1913-14 for his wife, Olive, with Boston architect J. Williams Beal, and it had novelties for its day such as a circular shower and a central vacuum system. Plant lost it in the 1930s. The Castle Preservation Society now runs it. The mansion, carriage house, gift shop, gallery, and cafe are open from late May to early October, and the property is on the National Register of Historic Places (2018). Hiking trails and horseback rides use the surrounding land.
