The Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves one of the most complete and authentic frontier military posts from the Indian Wars era. Established in 1859 to protect travelers and freight along the Santa Fe Trail, the fort features nine original sandstone buildings, including barracks, officers’ quarters, and a blacksmith shop. Visitors can explore the grounds, view period furnishings, and experience living history demonstrations that bring the 1860s military life to vivid reality. The site also includes a visitor center with exhibits and a short film that contextualizes the fort’s role in westward expansion and Native American relations.

Managed by the National Park Service, Fort Larned offers ranger-led tours, educational programs, and special events throughout the year. The surrounding prairie landscape and reconstructed features like the parade ground and flagpole enhance the immersive experience. Whether you're a history enthusiast or a family seeking a meaningful stop along the Santa Fe Trail, Fort Larned provides a powerful window into a pivotal chapter of American history.
