The National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall near L'Enfant Plaza opened its main building in 1976 (established in 1946 as the National Air Museum) and drew about 6.2 million visitors in 2018, among the most visited museums in the world. Its collection includes the Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia, and almost everything on display is an original or the original backup. Gyo Obata's design is four marble cubes linked by glass atria housing large aircraft and spacecraft. Timed-entry passes may be required, and the museum has been renovating its galleries.
