Overview
Christ Church in Old City is an Episcopal parish founded in 1695 as part of the Church of England and a National Historic Landmark, important in founding the Episcopal Church in the U.S. (rector William White became its first Presiding Bishop in 1785). Its 196-foot steeple was the tallest structure in what is now the United States from 1754 to 1810, and Washington and other Revolutionary figures worshiped here. More than 250,000 people visit each year, and it still serves as a parish.
