Overview

Fort Necessity National Battlefield marks the site of the first battle of the French and Indian War, fought in 1754 when a young George Washington led colonial troops against the French. A reconstructed circular fort stands in the meadow, and the visitor center has artifacts, dioramas, and the 20-minute film "Road to Necessity." The site also commemorates the National Road, the first federally funded highway, with a preserved tavern.
