Overview
Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site preserves the Hasbrouck House, the stone residence that served as General George Washington's military headquarters from April 1782 until August 1783 during the closing stages of the American Revolutionary War. During his stay, Washington oversaw the transition from war to peace and confronted challenges that would help define the future of the nation. It was here that he helped defuse the Newburgh Conspiracy, opposed proposals that could have placed him in a position of royal power, and established the Badge of Military Merit, the predecessor of today's Purple Heart.
