Overview

Castle Clinton National Monument is a circular sandstone fort in Battery Park, built from 1808 to 1811 to defend New York Harbor. It later became a beer garden and theater (Castle Garden) and, from 1855 to 1890, the country's first immigration depot. Today it is the ticket office and departure point for ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, with exhibits on its layered history.
