The Bronx Zoo is the largest metropolitan zoo in the U.S., 265 acres of naturalistic habitats along the Bronx River, opened on November 8, 1899 and run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages four zoos and an aquarium. It is world-renowned for its diverse animal collection and exhibits, and it has long been a leader in conservation: in 1905 the American Bison Society formed here to save the American bison from extinction.
