From Edison (5 mi): Take US-1 north toward Perth Amboy, continue to Kearny Avenue, and follow signs to the historic site at 149 Kearny Avenue overlooking Raritan Bay.

Overview

The Proprietary House in Perth Amboy is the last remaining official residence of a royal governor from the thirteen original colonies, an elegant Georgian mansion of the 1760s that housed East Jersey's governors and later royal governors. It also served during the Revolutionary War as a refuge and military headquarters, and restored rooms with period furnishings and exhibits interpret governors, soldiers, servants, and townspeople.
