How to Get There
From Hagerstown (15 mi): Take I-70 east toward Boonsboro, exit toward MD-66 South, continue through the South Mountain area, and follow signs to the battlefield headquarters at 6620 Zittlestown Road in Middletown.
Overview
South Mountain State Battlefield preserves the mountain passes where Union and Confederate forces fought on September 14, 1862 in the Maryland Campaign, at Fox's Gap, Turner's Gap, and Crampton's Gap. Forested ridges, farmland, overlooks, hiking trails, monuments, and interpretive markers trace the battle, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the battlefield with sweeping views.
