Overview
The Lonaconing Iron Furnace is a stone blast furnace built from 1837 to 1839 by the George's Creek Coal and Iron Company, one of the first successful facilities in the U.S. to smelt iron with coke, in a community park in the historic mining town of Lonaconing. Interpretive displays explain how iron was made and describe the workers, engineers, and investors of the region's coal and iron economy.
