Overview

Wildrose Peak is a popular Death Valley hike that begins at the historic Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, ten beehive-shaped kilns built in 1877 to fuel smelters for lead-silver mines. The trail climbs through pinyon and juniper woodland in the Panamint Mountains to a saddle with first views into Death Valley after 1.7 miles, then continues to the summit for 360-degree views of the Mojave Desert. On clear days the Sierra Nevada and Mount Whitney are visible in the west, with Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, more than 9,000 feet below to the east.
