Overview
Telescope Peak is the highest point in Death Valley National Park at 11,331 feet, in the Panamint Range, and one of the park’s premier hikes. On a clear day, the summit gives 100-mile views, from Mount Whitney in the west to Charleston Peak in the east, and it rises more than 11,000 feet above Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, only 15 miles away. The name reflects the great distance visible from the top.
The standard route is a 14-mile round-trip hike from Mahogany Flat Campground, climbing steadily at about an 8% grade for 7 miles to the summit. No permit is required, and the trail is maintained by the National Park Service. The road to the trailhead through Wildrose Canyon and past the Charcoal Kilns is rough and may require a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, and snow can block the peak in winter.
