Overview
Panum Crater is a young volcanic cone on the south shore of Mono Lake, between 600 and 700 years old and part of the Mono-Inyo Craters chain. It is a textbook example of a rhyolite lava dome inside a pumice ring, and a rim trail and a short trail into the crater let visitors see pumice and obsidian, volcanic glass that Native Americans used for arrow points and scrapers. It is one of the easiest volcanoes in the region to explore.
