Overview

Cave Rock is a 250-foot volcanic rock formation on Lake Tahoe’s east shore beside U.S. 50, with the highway passing through the Cave Rock Tunnel. It is a remnant of a volcanic vent whose caves were carved by waves during the Ice Age. Sacred to the Washoe people, it was listed as a Traditional Cultural Property and on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017, and it is best admired from the road and nearby boat launch.
