From San Francisco (122mi) Get on US-101 S. Continue on US-101 S to Monterey County. Continue on Ocean Ave. Take 8th Ave to Scenic Rd in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Overview

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a storybook seaside village of about 3,200 residents on the Monterey Peninsula, roughly 120 miles south of San Francisco. It is known for its white-sand beach, fairy-tale cottages, art galleries, boutiques, tasting rooms and restaurants, and for strict rules that keep the town small, such as the lack of street numbers, neon signs and chain stores.

Visitors come to Carmel for its European-style charm, its walkable downtown on Ocean Avenue, the beach at the end of the street, and its pet-friendly hotels and shops. It is also the gateway to Point Lobos, the Carmel Valley and Big Sur, and it is close to Monterey and the golf courses of Pebble Beach.

History

The Spanish priest Junipero Serra moved Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo to its present site in 1771, and the mission became his headquarters and burial place. The village was laid out in 1902 and became an artists' and writers' colony after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake drew artists south. The town incorporated in 1916, and the actor and director Clint Eastwood served as its mayor from 1986 to 1988.

The 17-Mile Drive, Carmel Beach, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Carmel Mission are the main sights, while Ocean Avenue is lined with courtyards and cottages. Tor House, built by poet Robinson Jeffers from stones of the shore, and the Hansel-and-Gretel-style cottages by Hugh Comstock are well-known architectural landmarks.

Carmel has more than 100 art galleries and a long tradition of theater and music, including the Forest Theater (1910), the Sunset Center, and the Carmel Bach Festival each July. The Carmel Mission Basilica and Museum displays the restored mission church, and the Carmel Art Association, founded in 1927, shows work by local artists.

Parks

Carmel Beach is a wide white-sand beach where dogs can run off-leash, and Mission Trail Nature Preserve has trails through coastal forest. Carmel River State Beach, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and the Garrapata and Big Sur coast are nearby, offering tide pools, sea otters, harbor seals and migrating whales.
