Overview
Bodie State Historic Park is California’s best-known ghost town, a National Historic Landmark at 8,379 feet in the Bodie Hills near Bridgeport, about 75 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe. A gold rush boomtown that reached 7,000–10,000 people by 1879, it has been preserved in a state of “arrested decay,” with about 100 weathered buildings still holding goods and furnishings. Roughly 200,000 people visit each year.
